ENT532. Assassin bug.
On October 4, 2023, Mount Nittany Trailhead, State College, Pennsylvania State.
An assassin bug nymphal stage (Zelus sp., Reduviidae, Hemiptera) was spotted on a leaf of a small tree, camouflaging with the green background of the woods, waiting for the prey (a Hymenopteran species) to fall within its proximity.
The assassin bug predator caught the Hymenopteran prey and was feeding on it on the upper surface of the leaf. When disturbed by the creator of this work, the assassin bug "escaped" and dragged the food with it to the lower surface of the leaf and kept going from the upper to the lower surfaces to protect its prey, possibly from any competition on the food sources. I wonder, though, if the assassin bug benefits the plant or merely eats!
