Gender and humanity project Public

This was a project originally created by Megan Mac Gregor who approached Sarah Luvender about using it for her BB H 146 class. Students were split into the teams listed below and instructed to cut out images from popular magazines that represented what they found the magazines to be saying about what a Man, Woman or just a person should be and want. Team He-Man Congrads! You'll be working on Team He-Man. Your task is to go into the magazines and pull out the manliest man ads you can find! You don't care what men are actually like, you want ads that show what men are suppose to be like; man stereotypes. Think of everything the class came up with for the "Be a Man" box. We want ads that show men at their manliest! Team High Femme Congrads! You'll be working on Team High Femme! Your task is to go into the magazines and pull out the girliest girl ads you can find! You don't care what women are actually like, you want ads that show what women are suppose to be like; women stereotypes. Think of everything the class came up with for the "Act like a Lady" box. We want ads that show women at the most feminine. Team Everyman Congrads! You'll be working on Team Everyman! Your task is to go into the magazines and pull out ads that show what real men are like, not what society thinks they should be. Think about men as human beings not just men. What does it mean to be a human who happens to be male. What kind of things break the man stereotype? Think about what the class said fell outside of the "Act like a Man" box. Team Everywoman Congrads! You'll be working on Team Everywoman! Your task is to go into the magazines and pull out ads that show what real women are like, not what society thinks they should be. Think about women as human beings not just women. What does it mean to be a human who happens to be female. What kind of things break the female stereotype? Think about what the class said fell outside of the "Act like a Lady" box. This led to a discussion about how media and society portrays people as being and who we actually are.
