RADIATION STABILITY OF A COAL TAR PITCH

Special Research Report SR-13 Irradiation of a representative high temperature coal t.ar pitch at less than 50°C, in The Pennsylvania State University Nuclear Reactor has been investigated, . 4 8 The dosages ranged from 3,5 x 10 to 3.5 x 10 rads. In the majority of the runs, the samples consisted of -40 mesh particles, sealed either under a vacuum or under an atmosphere of air. Chemical and physical properties that are indicative of radiationinduced changes were evaluated by the following methods: viscosity measurement, infrar~d and x-ray diffraction analysis of the stl!ucture 1 of the irradiated pitch, and mass spectrometric analysis of the evolved gas. An attempt was made to improve the quantitative aspects of some of the techniques used.
