DNA was obtained from a skin sample taken from a preserved mountain lion (Puma concolor) that was hunted and killed in Pennsylvania in 1874. The mountain lion was preserved via taxidermy and is under the care of the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA.
