Security Through Obscurity No Longer Public

This presentation explores the challenges archivists face in managing and providing access to born-digital content within personal papers received from donors. Potential steps for processing potentially sensitive born-digital materials donated (such as actual hard drives from the author’s computers) are given. Tools to scan files for personally-identifiable information (pii) such as credit card and social security numbers as well as hidden and deleted files are discussed. Options for providing access to born-digital materials while still protecting sensitive content and the author’s intellectual property rights are also explored. Delivered at the fall 2012 meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC). Includes gift agreement addenda for donors giving electronic records to a repository.
