Betty Parsons Gallery Sales and Purchases, 1946-1981 Part 2 Public

This dataset builds on the work started by Keri Mongelluzzo in 2018, deriving data from the Betty Parsons Gallery Sales and Inventory Records, 1946-1981 held in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. This dataset includes sales invoices from all artists represented in the files, excluding Ellsworth Kelly, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, and Hedda Sterne, which are covered in the Mongelluzzo dataset. The 3974 objects were recorded in digitized files grouped Sales Invoices by Artist and Sales Invoices by Buyer. These objects were sold by the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City between 1946 and 1981. By recording sales invoices of artists not included in the Mongelluzzo dataset, this complementary record allows for broader comparisons across materials and buyers, as well as incorporating a range of objects including sculpture. With this new data it is also possible to explore objects which buyers decided to purchase, but then returned or cancelled.

METHODS

The dataset compiles sales records of a prominent New York gallery between 1946 and 1981. The Betty Parson Gallery was noted for its connection to abstract expressionism. This dataset, in conjunction with an earlier dataset, allows for a comparison of gallery purchases post-World War II. Scans of the original invoices can be found at: https://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/betty-parsons-gallery-records-and-personal-papers-7211/series-5. This dataset will allow for the comparison of surface area, asking price, price sold, and whether the transaction was cancelled or returned. These comparisons can be made in relationship to artist, buyer, or buyer location.

COLUMN HEADERS

The majority of these columns were established in the previous dataset compiled by Keri L. Mongelluzzo. New columns were added including Artist Name (Standardized), Date (single year), Depth (inches), Sculpture Specified, and Cancelled/Returned.

METADATA COLUMNS

Box: Smithsonian Archives of American Art box number for the invoice.

Folder: Smithsonian Archives of American Art folder number for the invoice.

Sheet: Smithsonian Archives of American Art sheet number for the invoice.

Object Title: Title of the purchased work. Items such as documentary photographs and catalogs were not included in table.

Artist: Name of the artist of the purchased work. Most often in first and last name format, but the table retains any idiosyncrasies of the original record, including typing errors and abbreviations.

Artist Name (Standardized): Name of artist in first and last name format. Name from the Union List of Artist Names when listed. Accents were not included to avoid incompatibilities with the csv file.

Date: Year the artist completed the object.

DATE (single year): Year the object was created; if the work spanned several years only the last year is represented. This column is for use with programs which do not recognize date ranges.

Medium: Encompasses both material and method of production. The entry reflects the original invoice. The category retains the significant variation in terms and specificity used in the records.

Height (inches): Height of the object in decimal format.

Width (inches): Width of the object in decimal format.

Depth (inches): Depth of object in decimal format. Most often specified for sculpture, but may include works described as paintings with uncommon depth.

Surface Area (square inches): Surface area of the object in square inches. The area for circular works was determined using the radius multiplied by 3.14 and the area for spheres determined by multiplying 4 by 3.15 by the radius. If only a portion of the measurement of a work was recorded (i.e. only the height of a sculpture) this entry may not reflect the full scale of the work.

Sculpture Specified: If the invoice specifically references sculpture, noted with ?yes.?

Date of Sale: Date of sale in year month day format.

Rounded Asking Price: Asking price rounded to the nearest dollar.

Asking Price: Exact asking price.

Price Sold: Final price reflecting discounts and deducted rental fees, but not the New York sales tax which was only required on purchases sold to residents of the city.

Discount: Yes specifies there was a discount, No specifies no discount.

Cancelled/Returned: If the object appeared on an invoice listed under sales, but included a notation indicating the work was returned to the gallery or cancelled, noted with ?yes.?

Buyer: The name of the buyer as recorded on the invoice including honorifics, first and last name. The entry reflects variation within the original record including multiple spellings and intermittent inclusion of initials. If a company was noted in the buyer heading, the company name appears in the buyer column with any individuals listed as a contact under notes.

Buyer Code: Specifies 0 for individual buyers and 1 for institutional buyers.

Location of Buyer: City of buyer. This column includes the billing address, with any delivery addresses listed in notes. The city and state are entered for cities in the United States. For international purchases, the city and country are listed.

Latitude: A general latitude for the city listed under location of buyer.

Longitude: A general longitude for the city listed under location of buyer.

Notes: Additional information about the object record.

TECHNICAL NOTES ON THE DATA

  • Empty fields indicate where data did not appear on the original invoice. Information for size, medium, and date of production were sometimes not included, particularly in the early years of the gallery. Artist name was most often not included for works sold by the gallery produced before the common era.

- Buyer names are not listed when drawn from records of artist sales, consignments, and other documents which did not record such information.
