Improving Book Reviews Public

Students, Librarians, and Faculty Working Together

OBJECTIVES Groundwork: The perceived value of book reviews is in decline in academia, meanwhile student demand for engaged scholarship is increasing. Our contribution was to think about book reviews as a form of undergraduate research. Question: How can we take concrete steps to improve book reviews co-authored with undergraduate students? Approach: Worked side-by-side with librarians to improve student and faculty “information literacy.” This prepared us to develop and test a rubric for writing scholarly book reviews.
