Mark Twain Books in Public Library Catalogs

This file is a list of public libraries in the United States that were founded before 1920. The list was compiled to support a project on public library holdings of Mark Twain's major works during his lifetime (e.g., 1869-1910). The author contacted each library in 2008 to ask whether the library owned printed catalogs, accession books, or other records listing titles in their collections during the 1870s-1910s. If a library owned such records, staff were asked to check the records for holdings of 9 of Mark Twain's books, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, Puddinhead Wilson, and other works.
