  1. Peering Outward: Data Curation Services in Academic Libraries and Scientific Data Publishing [Download]

Title: Peering Outward: Data Curation Services in Academic Libraries and Scientific Data Publishing
    Depositor: Patricia M Hswe
    Creator:
    • Hswe, Patricia
Description: Data curation services in libraries are poised to make strides in science data publishing. A chief objective in data curation is ensuring that data are shareable. To provide curation services for research data is, in part, to foster channels of access to them, such as through citation and publication. This chapter teases out the synergy between publishing services and data curation services in libraries. It reports on the current status of each type of service, providing context and drawing out comparisons between library publishing and data publishing. The complications surrounding peer review of data sets are also examined. Such background sets the stage for assessing the state of data publishing in the sciences by looking in brief at data policies currently enacted by journal publishers for associating articles with data sets, data repositories that publishers and researchers use for linking data with publications, and the genres of the data journal and the data paper. It also captures briefly what some programs and services in publishing and data curation at academic libraries are currently accomplishing in data publishing. As the chapter suggests, the paradigm for publication of data in the sciences seems always to be shifting. The goal, however, is to lay a foundation for understanding scientific data publishing, as well as the role that data curation services in libraries can play in it.

Description: This talk was resented at the 2014 Open Repositories Conference in Helsinki, Finland. User experience continues to be an under-explored area for repository services, even more than a decade into the production instances of many institutional repositories (IRs). Only a handful of articles, for example, are dedicated to usability, persona development, and end-user expectations in IRs. One reason for this gap is that libraries rarely have the resources, in terms of personnel, time, budgets, and tools, to commit toward user experience design and development. Another reason is the struggle that libraries have had in defining the services encompassed by IRs. Our paper proposes to help bridge this seeming chasm by reporting on efforts undertaken to develop and manage a user-driven repository service at Penn State. We will show that, even in the absence of resources, such as a user experience specialist, it is possible to “hack” user experience for a repository service, mainly by doing the following: prioritizing people and community building along with service development; leveraging such engagement by crafting use cases and user scenarios to inform the service; and being creative with the “seamless merging” of the key components of user experience, such as engineering, marketing, graphical and industrial design, and interface design.

Description: This presentation will detail the ways in which The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) Libraries have implemented new organizational collaborations, departmental models, and positions for advancing a rich program of digital scholarship services, with particular attention to support for the digital humanities (DH). One example is the department of Publishing and Curation Services (PCS). In developing a digital scholarship services program that mindfully engages participation from liaison librarians, PCS has taken a three-pronged approach: it is building capacity and depth for multidisciplinary, cohesive support and collaboration in data curation, scholarly publishing, and digital projects. A key programmatic area for the university, the department, and the libraries has been DH, in which humanities librarians at Penn State have been strategically active. A variety of funding, partnership, and hiring strategies continue to build growth and commitment in DH. These include the libraries’ alliance with the College of Liberal Arts in the university’s “Humanities in a Digital Age” initiative, a partnership that created the new, jointly funded position of Digital Humanities Research Designer (DHRD). The DHRD reports to PCS yet intentionally works outward, in collaboration with liaison librarians and technologists, and thus across organizational lines and structures in the libraries and at the university as a whole. The permeable boundaries of PCS as an “undepartment” kind of department translate to those of the positions it engages, like the DHRD, to achieve its programmatic and service goals, including revisiting and revising approaches to technology and other infrastructure support. A cornerstone of this project briefing will be an overview of the kinds of collaborations, both scholarly and pedagogical, in which the DHRD is engaged within the College of Liberal Arts community. They model DH project development as hybrid, inclusive, and iterative. The presentation will outline how the DHRD and liaison librarians partner with learners, both student and faculty, as collaborators, so that projects become pedagogical mechanisms as much as scholarly objectives, and how this model feeds into a community-of-praxis approach, toward the development of a sustainable DH infrastructure. The presentation will demonstrate how these activities are informing a collective, “de-siloized” understanding of services for DH.

Description: In fall 2012 Penn State released ScholarSphere, a repository service supporting self-deposit of research materials, for preservation and access. Shortly after ScholarSphere went into production, we launched work on Sufia with other Hydra community members. Sufia, the engine that powers ScholarSphere and provides its baseline functionality, facilitates sharing of the code base. Our poster, presented at the 2013 Digital Library Federation Forum, shows how community-based collaborations can propel an iterative design and development; enhance usability; and even lead to unexpected benefits (such as the creation of Sufia). The poster includes a technical architecture model; code contribution visualizations; screen captures of ScholarSphere; and usability testing script excerpts.

Description: Since its coinage by Kevin Lynch in his 1960 book, The Image of the City, wayfinding has been investigated at length in fields such as architecture, computer science (specifically human-computer interaction [HCI]), consumer economics, and environmental psychology: the behavior is broken down into observable activities, and methodologies such as surveys, field experiments, and brief interviews—all of which measure how well or how poorly people find their way—are applied. This brief literature review considers research done on wayfinding in the real world, on the Web, and in virtual environments (VEs). Prefaced by a discussion of the intrinsic semantics of the term (to trace its likely original connotation), the review addresses the major contributions on wayfinding to LIS, followed by a survey of some of the studies done in other fields, in an effort to begin to understand how to orient the subject for more extensive research in LIS. (This paper was written for LIS503: Use and Users of Information, taught by Professor Carole L. Palmer, in Spring 2006 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.)

Description: Activated in January 2011, the National Science Foundation requirement to include data management plans with grant proposal submissions has compelled many academic libraries to revisit their service offerings, particularly in the context of assisting researchers with managing their data in efficient, productive ways. This chapter covers the status of data management services in academic libraries in the years since the NSF requirement went into effect. It explores the reasons why data need to be managed, and why librarians and libraries are up to the task; describes the steps that various libraries have taken to determine service, staffing, and infrastructure requirements; provides a brief overview of current data management service offerings in libraries; and, in conclusion, touches on the emergence of new librarian roles, including postdoctoral positions, that have arisen to meet demands in data management and data curation in academic libraries.

Description: This paper describes how the Pennsylvania State (Penn State) University Libraries and the university’s central information technology organization, Information Technology Services, are putting into practice key tenets of digital curation through the newly established Content Stewardship program, a joint strategic initiative to implement stewardship services for the university. First, we provide an account of the planning, preparation, and prototyping that informed the initial year of the program. Second, we report on the hiring of a Digital Collections Curator and a Digital Library Architect and how they are advancing the program by putting digital curation into practice, which includes the work of community building. Finally, we address the organizational context of curation in practice, in particular with respect to the challenges of starting and sustaining a stewardship services program for all of Penn State.

Abstract for the panel: "Data management is the foundation for scholarly research. Publishers and funding agencies are increasingly requiring researchers to share their data. Having a data management plan fulfills federal agency requirements and makes it easier to use, but what are the issues to be addressed by data management plans? Who are the stakeholders? What are the costs? The key is the development of policies and processes for access, sharing, and preservation, including provisions for the appropriate protection of privacy, confidentiality, security, and intellectual property.
